OnePlus 5 specs point to massive upgrades

It wasn’t long ago the OnePlus 3T hit the market, but rumors of a follow-up are already swirling. Thanks to a report from PC Pop, details for the OnePlus 5 (not a typo) have been unveiled, and it sounds like fans of the brand are in for quite the upgrade.

PC Pop claims the upcoming device will feature an all-new design, including a 5.5-inch 2K screen that features very little bezel. As a result, the fingerprint reader will be moved to the back, though OnePlus will still apparently include front-facing capacitive buttons (which can be disabled).

It’s unclear how else the design will be changed. The Galaxy S8 and LG G6 have moved to all glass, and the iPhone 8 is rumored to take a similar approach. Perhaps we can expect the OnePlus 5 to do the same thing in an effort to keep pace with its more powerful competitors.

Other potential features of the OnePlus 5 may include a Snapdragon 835 processor, 3,000mAh battery, and a 23-megapixel camera. If I were a betting man, I’d also expect IP68 water and dust resistance, 6GB of RAM, wireless charging, and microSD support.

Will the price go up?

With a higher resolution screen and revamped design, one has to wonder if the OnePlus 5 will have a higher entry price compared to its predecessors. When the OnePlus 2 was announced, for example, the most affordable model cost $329; the OnePlus 3 launched for $399, while the OnePlus 3T currently goes for $439. Prices tend to go up when the latest specs are involved.

OnePlus typically unveils new devices over the summer, so we could potentially see an official announcement soon. (It’s already April, after all.)
